Rubber

Rubber is a polymer composed of hydrogen and carbon. It is elastic, and found in the flow of certain plants, but it is also produced synthetically. Rubber is produced through the process of excavating plants called Hevea Brasiliensis.

This material is obtained from the tree through a process called tapping, in which the worker uses a sharp knife to make thin incisions in the trunk. The incision penetrates the bark and latex ducts, but the underlying layer should remain unchanged. When the fluid comes out of the tree, it usually includes natural rubber, protein, water, and other biomaterials.

Rubber is found in two types of natural latex and natural rubber. Natural latex refers to the white fluid obtained from the rubber tree. It consists of small rubber particles and vegetable proteins. Natural rubber is produced with the help of two processes – Natural Rubber Latex Process or Dry Natural Rubber Process, which includes all products made from latex.

Synthetic rubber is produced through the polymerization of various monomers. Rubber products are widely used in various aspects of industry and life.

Rubber Fender

Rubber fender, which is installed on the dock or ship, is used to absorb collision energy, in order to protect ship or dock.

Classification

Normally, rubber fender is divided in two parts based on structure: Solid Rubber Fender (non-floating) and Floating Rubber Fender.
Solid rubber fender is anti-collision equipment of dock or ship, with wide range of application. Based on the force situation, it can divide into D Type, Cone Type, Super Cell Type, Rectangular Type, Cylindrical Type etc.
Floating rubber fender can be free-floating. Based on the difference of inside buffer medium, it is divided into Pneumatic Rubber Fender and Filled Rubber Fender.
Pneumatic rubber fender can absorb energy via compressed air.
Filled Rubber Fender is made of closed cell material, like EVA, foam rubber etc.

Feature and application

Solid rubber fender has higher absorption energy and reaction force.
Meanwhile, it has low cost, long lifespan, easy assembly and maintenance.
That is a good protective device to be installed on the ship or dock.
Floating rubber fender is a newer fender. Compared with solid rubber fender, the main features are large deformation, high absorption energy, low reaction force, free-floating, easy assembly etc. Usually, it is used as areas of ship to ship, ship to wharf. Due to free-floating, it also is suitable for dock installation of higher tidal level.
Filled rubber fender is suitable for bad weather based on lifespan and no need of repair, like offshore drilling platform.

Standard

HG/T 2866-2003 Rubber Fenders>, are adopted industry standards of solid rubber fender at present. The industry standards of pneumatic rubber fender are and ISO17357:2002 < High pressure Floating pneumatic rubber fenders >. Filled rubber fender is a new product for only a few years. Non standards can be used nowadays.

When is EPDM the best choice for rubber sealing strips?

EPDM (ethylene propylene diene monomer) is a compound that resists aging, ozone, acid, alkali, water and extreme weather. EPDM is widely used in the extrusion industry, such as automotive door seals and weather strips, door and window seals for construction, and a variety of strips used on machines.

Advantage
The most important feature of EPDM is its excellent resistance to oxidation, ozone and chemical stability. Moreover, thermal insulation properties and electrical insulation properties are also good.  It also has high tensile strength and good elasticity.  EPDM is usually used instead of silicone. Silicone can withstand lower and higher temperatures, but they lack the abrasion resistance, tear resistance and cut resistance of EPDM. EPDM also provides better tensile strength than silicone rubber. So this cost-effective EPDM is usually a better choice than silicone – especially for outdoor environments.

Disadvantage
The main disadvantage of EPDM is that the resistance to some chemicals is unsatisfactory. It’s not suitable for general mineral oils, lubricants and hydraulic fluids. For fuel, grease and oil resistant applications, nitrile is a better choice than EPDM. It is important to check chemical compatibility before choosing EPDM.

Classification
Currently, EPDM is the most popular extruded material. EPDM sealing strips include solid rubber sealing strips, sponge rubber sealing strips, composite sealing stripes, static electricity flocking sealing stripes, cottonbatting-all-steel composite sealing stripes etc.

Application
EPDM seals can be used for a long time without cracking and deformation. They can maintain their good sealing performance and work during -40℃ to 120℃. They have been widely used in automobile, construction, machinery, electronic, electrical cabinet industries etc. The specific application is as follows:
a. Plastic steel doors and windows, aluminum alloy doors and windows, wooden doors and windows and other architectural decorative doors and windows: The main function of door and window seals are dustproof, mothproof, waterproof, soundproof and sealed.
b. Automobile door and window frame, front and rear windshield, engine cover and trunk lid: Automobile seals play the roles of waterproof, mothproof, waterproof, soundproof, temperature insulation, shock absorption and decoration properties.
c. Electrical cabinet seals: It has good sealing, waterproof, mothproof, lightproof, anti-collision and long service life.
